Mount Vernon is the Franklin County seat.  The downtown area reflects a small-town atmosphere. The central plaza has a picturesque gazebo and park benches. This is where the walk started.

Bankhead Highway Visitor Center – Bankhead Highway was the first transcontinental highway across the US and it passed through Mt. Vernon

1912 county jail is now a museum.

Franklin County Courthouse circa 1912 is a lovely Classical Revival building.
